Geography Intent

At Brownsover Community School, our intent for Geography education is to provide a balanced, broad and engaging curriculum that meets the needs and interests of our pupils. We aim to tap into children’s natural curiosity of the world and foster a fascination alongside encouraging children to consider their place in it. We want to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to help them make sense of the world around them and become responsible global citizens. We will achieve this by delivering high-quality teaching that promotes active learning, risk-taking and inspires a love of learning.

Geography Implementation

We will ensure that every child receives a high-quality Geography education by implementing the following:

1. Broad and balanced curriculum: We will deliver a Geography curriculum that covers topics such as physical and human geography, locational knowledge, place knowledge (declarative knowledge – the facts). Using geography skills and fieldwork (procedural knowledge) will equip students with key skills such as how to use maps and how to collect data. We will ensure that there is a good balance between the development of geographical skills and knowledge.
2. Active Learning: Our teaching of Geography will be driven by active and experiential learning. This will include fieldwork, investigative work, use of maps, videos, and technology, and class discussions. We will also ensure that our pupils have access to a range of resources that can foster and develop their learning.
3. Differentiated teaching: We will ensure that our teaching is differentiated to meet the diverse needs and abilities of our pupils. This will involve adapting the curriculum, resources, and teaching style to suit the individual needs of every child in our school.
4. Cross-Curricular Links: We will develop strong cross-curricular links with other subjects. This will help our pupils to understand how different subjects link together and how they can be used to understand the world around them. This can be seen but not limited to our half termly class continent learning focus.

Geography Impact

The impact of our Geography curriculum will be demonstrated through children's enjoyment, engagement, and enthusiasm for learning about the world around them. Children's understanding and knowledge of their local environment and beyond will be evident in their language, questions, and critical thinking alongside work in their topic books/ floor books. As children progress through the school, they will build on their existing knowledge, deepening and broadening their knowledge and skill set to support them in becoming active and responsible citizens who care about their environment.
