  • Identify the features of a newspaper report

We will writing newspaper reports about The Great Fire of London!

Autumn 2 - Maths - Addition and Subtraction

Autumn 2 - Topic - Light and Dark

In our Light and Dark topic this half term we will be learning about:

  • The Great Fire of London
  • The Gunpowder Plot
  • Everyday Materials
  • How houses have changed throughout time
  • Diwali (in our RE lessons)

We explored different artefacts, pictures, books and key vocabulary from each of the aspects of our new topic. This showed us what we already knew, helped us think of questions we would like to find out and made us intrigued and excited to learn!

The Gunpowder Plot

Lots of the questions from our knowledge harvest were about Bonfire night and Guy Fawkes. One of the books we looked at as part of our knowledge harvest had an illustration of a ‘Guy Fawkes doll’ on top of a Bonfire and many of us where curious about this!

We discussed things you might see or do on Bonfire night and learnt the story of Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot. We learnt that Bonfire night is celebrated on 5th November to remember and celebrate when Guy Fawkes and the other plotters were discovered by the King’s guards and the plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament with gunpowder and kill King James I was stopped.

After this we worked in groups to complete different activities to explore the story of Guy Fawkes and The Gunpowder plot more! The activities helped us to be historians and learn about a significant event that happened long ago. They also helped us to practise our speaking and listening skills by retelling the story or learning a poem by memory!
