Science

Science Intent

At Brownsover Infant School, we want our children to be enthusiastic scientists who have great respect for the world in which they live.

We teach Science in a creative, cross-curricular approach so that our children’s natural curiosity and inquisitiveness is sparked and purposeful links between their learning are made. This will enable us to develop the Scientists and Engineers of the future.

Our pupils develop their Scientific Knowledge through hands-on investigations.  Our engaging, hands-on practical learning experiences promote their value of independence and engage our pupils with the processes of working like a scientist. These are their working scientifically skills which are built-upon and developed throughout their school careers at Brownsover. When our pupils leave us in Year 2, we want them to be able to independently use simple equipment, conduct investigations, answer questions and explain concepts confidently so that they are ready for more discoveries when embarking on their Scientific learning journey in Key Stage Two.

Science Implementation

Through our thematic, cross-curricular planning, teachers promote a love of Science and allow our children to make deep connections between their learning. Our whole-school approach to the teaching and learning of Science involves the following:

  • Science is taught in Early Years through the 'Understanding the World' strand of the Early Years statutory framework. They are given opportunities to explore scientific concepts through structured play activities.
  • In Key Stage One, Teachers use the National Curriculum for guidance when planning the teaching of Scientific Knowledge.
  • Working Scientifically skills are embedded within our lessons. We pose different styles of questions to the children so that they are taught a range of scientific enquiries (observing over time; pattern seeking; identifying, classifying and grouping; comparative testing; and researching using secondary sources).
  • Children are taught correct Scientific vocabulary, which is progressively built-upon.
  • Children’s Scientific Learning is celebrated in our Learning Showcase Walls. This is to promote a love of Science and pride in their work.
  • Science Week, Trips and Enrichments are planned to further inspire and engage our pupils. For example, in the Summer Term 2022 our pupils loved meeting Alpacas.

Science Impact

Our children thoroughly enjoy their Science Lessons and are able to talk confidently about different conceptual ideas. They are able to work like scientists and respect the world in which they live.
