PSHE

PSHE Intent

Brownsover is a caring school where we value each other as individuals. We have created a nurturing learning environment where the children are able to demonstrate independence but equally are able to work constructively with others. The children are able to articulate their views and have a developing understanding of the views of others.  We understand how to be healthy and keep ourselves safe.  We help children to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes which will help them develop positive relationships with others. We build resilience and ensure that the children know what to do or who to talk to if they are being bullied or if children are being unkind and saying things about the way they look that hurt their feelings.  We are developing their understanding of how they fit into the world and how they can prepare for their future as lifelong learners.

PSHE Implementation

Our school values are embedded throughout our school and within the curriculum itself. They help to build self-esteem and promote positive behaviour. PSHE is taught on a weekly basis, with some content also being taught through other subject areas. It is also taught within other contexts, such as whole school assemblies, circle time and class assemblies. The children are made aware when they are learning aspects of PSHE and how it is built in to everything that we do throughout school. PSHE education will be provided to all children within our school. Children with SEND will be supported to access PSHE and RSE through teacher-led quality first teaching, following the guidance of the SEND code of practice. As a school we follow the scheme ‘Guide to Life’ a well being and personal development programme that provides strategies and self help for all children to check in with themselves and understand their own well-being. The programme has three themed blocks: Being Me, Belonging and Healthy Me. Each session has a key message for children to take away and reflect on, as well as giving the children the opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings with their classmates and trusted adults around them.

PSHE Impact

Good quality PSHE education forms the preparation for adult life, enabling the child to understand and face the challenges and questions that arise in a diverse world. At Brownsover Community School we like to emphasise and focus on the word community, so that the children acknowledge and feel part of our school community as well as the wider community around us. Our children will be equipped with the skills to enable them to adapt, grow and apply strategies to look after their mental health and well-being. The children will become more emotionally aware and resilient and develop the vocabulary and knowledge to recognise and discuss feelings and emotions. Impact can be measured in a variety of ways. At Brownsover Community school we recognise and celebrate the importance of the child’s voice and this is evident from the judgement of ‘Outstanding’ given by Ofsted in January 2019 for personal development, behaviour and welfare.
