Design & Technology

Design and Technology - INTENT

We want our children to be able to use their creativity and imagination to design, make and evaluate products that solve real and relevant problems. We want to inspire them to become designers and makers of the future, willing to take creative risks in order to produce innovative ideas.

Design and Technology - IMPLEMENTATION

Design and Technology is taught through thematic topic work in line with the Early Years
Foundation Stage Framework and the National Curriculum. The Design and Technology Curriculum is planned for and covered in full within the EYFS and KS1 school curriculum.

 We provide:

· Design and Technology projects with a clear structure building on previously taught skills.

· Each unit of work follows the design process from research to design to making and evaluating.

· Units of work are taught in blocks to ensure continuity of the design process and
children the opportunity to totally immerse themselves in their work.

· In Early years, the pre-requisite skills and knowledge required for Design and
Technology are taught through our continuous provision. Children are taught to use tools, equipment and processes with increasing skill and accuracy.

· A range of knowledge and skills are taught ensuring that children are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken and the equipment used.

· Clear and appropriate cross curricular links underpin learning in multiple areas across the curriculum giving the children opportunities to learn life skills and apply skills to ‘hands on’ situations in a purposeful context.

· Independent learning: In Design and Technology children may be asked to solve
problems and develop their learning independently. This allows the children to have
ownership over their curriculum and lead their own learning in Design and Technology.

· Collaborative learning: In Design and Technology children may be asked to work as part of a team learning to support and help one another towards a challenging, yet rewarding goal.

 Design and Technology - IMPACT

Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum.

· Children will ultimately know more, remember more and understand more about Design and Technology, demonstrating this knowledge when using tools or skills in other areas of the curriculum and in opportunities out of school.
